Getting the best from your work

Hi all,
this is some advice I've given in the past to artists but I think the same advice is relevant for anyone using a digital camera.

Through my own work I've found a lot of creatives particuarily in the painterly field, (cos photographers pretty much know this stuff, its their arena) record a small image or thumbprint of their work before selling original. The problem is that simply having an image of your work does not lend itself to other possible uses in the future. Ie. reproductions, enlargements, etc.

Sorry if this seems like I'm preaching to the converted and ignore this if you're all au fait with it, but for those who don't .......

For your own future use of your work, please if using a digital camera, use the highest digital setting ie.e fine or super fine to achieve the highest resolution and upload it at a high res as well. You never know what you may want to do in future with your archives and if the originals gone, its gone.

If its a 35mm camera you record your work with then please scan in at the highest resolution.

I know these things eat memory but you can back it up on discs.
With the whole advance of digital technology you want to give your image the best chance of having a longetivity of life,
which means by simply archiving at the highest res you never what know their future possibilities possess.

Wedding

I've just posted some images from a wedding shop shoot from Dec. The shoot was for Morrows Formal Wear in the city and the location was in the beautiful Morrow family home. Mrs Morrow was a delight and a real treasure to let us take over her home for the good part of a day. the best part was the 'High Tea' and homemade wheaten bread, fitting of such an environment. The lovely models Karen (2006 finalist Miss NI) and Jonathan came from Converse Models.

Dogs, St Patrick's Day, Mothers Day, New Premises...and other non specific things

At last we've all settled into our new offices but as yet for now the house is coming down with pictures!!! I feel a spring clean and newly painted walls coming on...

Although we have lost our in house studio  I don't think its a great loss as most of our photography is on-location work. I will however be investing in a portable backdrop in the near future and I still have my lights so I can still do the studio style shot, only now I can come to you.

Personally though I prefer more outdoors naturalistic shots (that have had some digital tweaking) to the high - key 'Lifestyle' studio shots that is all so popular at the moment. (I'll post some samples soon).

But hey it's all down to personal preference and the clients choice.

The new space is more like a workshop come office but we're still offering all the same products and services that did previously and we're also working hard here at Resolution art on lots of new ideas. We will  be launching a whole new range of products and ways to display very soon so watch this space. We're also aware the office won't have the same drop in customer as we're on the second floor but the office door is always open. Look out for us in the near future at the local Mall...(I've come over all American) you may even see us in the local shopping centre.

Now my really exciting news is we're expecting a new edition to the family....don't get too excited its the four legged variety. Meet Chilli  (image taken with iphone camera) 4 week old border collie cross, he's too young to leave his mummy presently but we're getting his house ready for his imminent arrival...the boys are sooo excited as am I. So expect lots of cute doggie pics!

It was St. Patricks Day yesterday we spent it watching a little parade in Dungannon and then driving in the country where the boys met Chilli, so I know I've missed lots of good photo ops from the carnival in Derry...It looked great on the news.

Mothers day is the next biggie so contact me if you need any ideas for pressies.

Well, back to work and as they say across the pond "Have a Nice Day".

Inspiring

Today is D day. We've moved all to our new studio and just need a few days to get set up.

We have good views now,  the historic Derry walls, the Bogside Murals and the mountains of Donegal, so plenty of inspiration to get us into creative mode.

We're flat out here getting ready for the big move, last nights cold weather has reaffirmed one of the reasons for our relocation.

It's (mild expletive) freezing in here!! There is no heat in the studio and Justyn's coat and scarf have become firmly attach to him over the last few months. 

He's really looking forward to walking into a new office with central heating...Hurrah! So things really are heating up here.

BIG NEWS! WE ARE RE-LOCATING

March, the month of Madness!! and true to form it's all systems go here at Resolution Art.

The big news  is....We are moving into the City Centre and we really will be Off the Walls!

Resolution Art is currently in the process of moving to Magazine Studios @ the Nerve Centre in Magazine St. The Magazine Studios (the old youth Hostel) has been purpose re-designed to accommodate a growing number of Arts and Design related businesses within the city walls.

We are very excited to be a part of this new Design 'Hub'.

We will be moving all week and setting up new shop in the next couple of weeks.

In the mean-time business will be conducted as usual (all work will be carried out off-premises).

You can contact us by email or telephone. we hope to carry out this move with as little disruption as possible to our customers and clients as possible and apologise in advance if there are any inconveniences.

Love is in the Air...Money CAN buy you..LOVE

Money CAN buy you Love....well....perhaps not love.. but thoughtful gifts can stand you in good stead... at least.....It doesn't have to be Valentines  day to appreciate the loved ones in your life. Check out our beautiful Klimt print 'The Kiss' (1907-1908). Over one hundred years old this beautiful image is testament to the artistic legacy of Gustav Klimt.  

Klimt was born in Austria in 1862 and died in 1918. He was one of the most prominent Symbolist painters and his highly decorative work is impressed with erotic symbolic and phallic meaning, one of his most enduring themes is that of the femme fatale.

The image is available in a variety of sizes either as a photographic print or a canvas and can be framed or stretched. 

If however, Klimt doesn't pull your artistic bells then let us know what does make your heart go thump a bump bump...and we'll source the image for you.

Now the twinkly lights on the christmas trees have been banished to the attic and the memories of another year begin to fade, Like many others, I find now is the time to take stock  of our lives.

For a lot of people it's hard (particuarily in January) to be stay positive when all around the 'credit crunch' starts to bite or every day the news brings word of another 'Giant' company toppling to its knees. 

I personally say 'ditch the doom and gloom merchants' get up brush ourselves down concentrate on the simple pleasures in life.  My list includes: children, family, love, country walks, beaches, pets, libraries, books, art, scrap books, photos, home-made food, board games, laughing, music and black and white films. 

Goodness, I sound just like Doris Day!

So here's to 2009, I for one think it will be a very good year.

Just a quick post to let you know the studio will be closed on Tuesday morning and will re-open just before Lunchtime.

This is the last week for Christmas orders so make sure you don't leave it too late.

You will however be able to buy gift vouchers right up to Christmas which are great for the sought after thoughtful bespoke Christmas present.

Last opening day before Christmas is the 23rd, we will be closed on Christmas Eve, so don't leave it too late!!

Competition Winner

Pictured centre is one year old Aaron O'Hagan receiving his Dragon Knight Transformation canvas from Justyn. also pictured are proud parents Denise and David O'Donnell. 

Aaron won a studio session and transformation canvas in a competition we ran in The Derry Journal. 

In this picture Justyn is also transforming into a dragon, he has already sprouted what looks like a green dragony tail!!

My Heroes

Had some fun last week with Cole aged 6 and Daithi aged 4, both superhero fans. 

for Cole's Show and Tell he took in his scrap book with some manipulated images!

now I have to make huge posters for them.

Willie Doherty at Foyle Film Festival

Foyle Film Festival, now in its 21st year kicked off on Friday Night. I have a real soft spot for the festival as I used to be involved, (12th-17th FFF) so I also know how much work it to pull the whole event together.

Credit to Director, Bernie McLaughlin and team who have succeeded in putting together a diverse programme of screenings and workshops.

I moseyed on down last night to the  Willie Doherty (twice nominated for Turner prize) screening of Ghost Story, a visual piece narrated by Stephen Rea on the themes of loss and foreboding. It was great to actually attend an event at the festival without working on it!.. and who should I bump into but my old cohort Shauna Kelpie, ( Director from 12-19th FFF), the lovely Colum Lynch giving his all (as usual) at the box office and Quiz Master extraordinaire Martin Bradley... Ghost Story was an apt title as for me it was like meeting up with the ghosts of festivals past. 

I would say that most of Derry's artistic community was present, which led to some interesting discussions in the VOID afterwards. 

I had a good conversation with the very talented and modest Seamus McGarvey (Oscar nominated cinematographer) about my own film loss... my final year Media studies film which I was quite proud of, unfortunately after its initial screening at the UU Coleraine and Belfast it seemed to disappear and all I have to prove I made it is a few rushes on a DVD somewhere.....ah well, I did get an RTE bursuary out of it... long since spent (like my youth...where ever he is). 

If you missed Willie Doherty's Ghost Story you should take yourself along to his exhibition APPARATUS / CLOSURE / EMPTY which will be in the VOID from 25th November to 23rd January.
